Important Information regarding lockout at McNamara Elementary School
Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,
The lockout that was initiated at McNamara Elementary School due to the report of a suspicious individual outside of the school building has been lifted.
Normal operations have resumed inside the school building.
A substitute teacher reported that a weapon was observed on school grounds. The School Resource Officer immediately responded to the vehicle where the weapon was observed and made contact with an individual. Law enforcement determined that the individual was in possession of a registered handgun and held a valid permit. No threats were made, and there was no indication of any intent to harm students or staff. The individual was taken into custody. At no time were students or staff in immediate danger, and the safety and security of our school community remains our top priority.
The District reminds all community members that weapons of any kind are prohibited on school grounds, regardless of whether an individual possesses a permit or license. Any report of a weapon on school property will be taken seriously and investigated immediately.
On behalf of the entire district, I would like to thank the Baldwinsville Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police for investigating and bringing the situation to quick resolution. Thank you to the substitute teacher who alerted staff immediately. This prompt action helped ensure the continued safety of our students and staff.
This incident also serves as an important reminder: if you see something, say something. We encourage students, staff, parents and community members to report any suspicious activity or safety concerns immediately. Prompt reporting allows us to respond quickly and helps keep our schools safe.
Sincerely,
Dr. Joseph M. DeBarbieri
Superintendent of Schools
