Ray Middle School sixth graders received a hands-on engineering lesson this week. Barton & Loguidice Project Engineer Emily Mahana and Vice President Mark Budosh met with classes on Monday and Tuesday.
The students were tasked with a challenge: Build a spacecraft that lands safely on the moon! The students were put into groups and given materials, including two big marshmallows who needed to stay safely in the spacecraft during the landing.
Students used a plastic cup, index cars, masking tape, straws and mini marshmallows to construct their spacecraft! Emily and Mark challenged the students to “think like an engineer” and to “think outside the box!”
“The creativity has been really great,” Mark said.
Emily said the lesson challenges the students to look at engineering in a different way.
“Oftentimes we think about engineering as being math and science,” she said. “Today we’re learning that it’s also about teamwork and communication. The students are working together towards the goal.”
