Reflecting on Our Values as a School District

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

I am writing to follow up on the Board of Education meeting held on Monday evening. During the meeting, several students spoke thoughtfully and courageously about their concerns regarding the climate in our schools and in the broader community, amid the divisive conversations unfolding on social media and in the local and national media. Their voices were respectful, sincere and heartfelt. We are grateful to them for sharing their perspectives.

Moments like this invite all of us – parents, guardians, staff and community members – to pause and reflect on who we are and what we stand for as a district.

At the heart of the Baldwinsville Central School District is our mission to educate and empower all students. Our Strategic Plan is grounded in a clear and unwavering commitment: to provide a safe, enriching and respectful learning environment for every child who walks through our doors. Safety, belonging and respect are not optional ideals – they are expectations that guide our daily work.

In our pursuit of excellence, we recognize that safety is not defined by a single gesture, symbol or sign. A symbol alone does not create a safe space; rather, every classroom, hallway, office, and activity should reflect a culture where students feel secure, valued and supported. True belonging is not isolated to one area, it must be woven into the fabric of our entire district. Each adult in our schools shares responsibility for maintaining stability in the classroom and fostering an environment where every student feels seen, heard and respected.

We are also aware of extensive public discussion and social media commentary surrounding a current personnel matter and related issues. Although we understand the community’s desire for information, the District is limited on information it can share. Speculation, misinformation and online gossip – regardless of intent – can cause real harm. They undermine trust and disrupt the supportive environment we are committed to maintaining.

At Monday’s meeting, one message was especially clear: our students are affected by what is being said online. They see it. They hear about it. They feel it. Several students directly asked for the negativity and divisiveness to stop. Their composure and professionalism were remarkable, and their example should give us all pause.

As adults, we should be modeling the very values we hope to instill in our children – respect, empathy, integrity, and thoughtful dialogue. Our students are watching how we respond in moments of disagreement or uncertainty. Let us rise to the occasion and demonstrate the maturity and care that our school community deserves.
