Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff,
As I reflect back on the events of the last week in Baldwinsville, I’m reminded that not only am I honored to be your superintendent but I’m also grateful to be raising my family in this community. I don’t think I can thank everyone enough for the support that was given to not only our eight families but all the families impacted by the devastating New Legacy Apartments fire. This is just the latest example as to why this is such an incredible place to live and work.
I know this has been a challenging week for many of us. It seems every time we turn on the news there’s another tragedy. In addition to the Baldwinsville fire and horrific plane crash near Washington, D.C., many of us are deeply impacted by the news of a tragic car accident involving two Fabius-Pompey Central School District students on their way to school Thursday morning. We send out our condolences to our neighbors in Fabius as they mourn 15-year-old Gavin Myers who lost his life. His sister, 17-year-old Gia Myers, is in critical condition. Baldwinsville knows this pain all too well and we understand the magnitude of such a loss in a close-knit community. We send our thoughts and prayers to all of his family, friends, classmates and school staff.
Our school counselors understand that students process trauma and grief in different ways at different times. I would like to remind our families that you are strongly encouraged to reach out to your child’s school counselor or principal whenever you have a concern or you feel your child could benefit from our support services. We are always here to help.
I hope everyone can find some time this weekend to relax with loved ones and friends. I think we all could use it. Take care of yourself and continue to take care of each other. Go Bees!
Sincerely,
Dr. Joseph M. DeBarbieri
Superintendent of Schools
