Superintendent's Message for 2024-2025

Superintendent Dr. DeBarbieri's Messages for 2024-2025

Below are all of the message sent out by Superintendent Dr. Joseph M. DeBarbieri during the 2024-2025 school year.

  • November 15, 2024

    Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,

Today our district participated in the Paige’s Pajamarama to raise money for the Paige's Butterfly Run Organization, which supports local children and their families who are battling cancer. For a donation of $1, loose change or more, students and staff wore pajamas to school “in honor of kids who have to.”

Paige Yeomans Arnold was a first grader at Palmer Elementary School when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She passed away a year later in 1994. Palmer teachers organized the first walk/run event in 1997 to honor Paige’s memory. The event and organization has continued to grow and has raised more than $5 million since 1997. We are proud to be part of the history of this important organization and honored to continue to support its efforts to “fight pediatric cancer and find hope.” Donations to the Baldwinsville fundraiser can still be made online.

I have a few announcements to share with you today:

    • Report Cards will be available in the Parent Portal (SchoolTool) at 3 p.m. today.

    Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,

It’s been a busy and exciting week for our Bees! The Boys Varsity Soccer team won the Section III Class AAA championship on Monday and Swimmer Olivia McManus won the Section III Class A Championship in the 100 butterfly on Wednesday. Olivia set a new school record, qualified for states and was the 5th overall swimmer. Great job, Bees!

There is no school and district offices are closed on Monday, November 11th in observance of Veterans Day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the veterans in our district for their bravery, dedication and service to our country! Our Marching Bees will be helping to honor our local veterans on Saturday as they perform in the 2024 CNY Veterans Parade, which starts at noon at the NYS Fairgrounds.

I have a several announcements to share with you today:

    • We are releasing the third video in our series for our Capital Improvement Project, which will go before voters on December 10, 2024. We solicited the help of our award-winning Baker News students to produce a series of videos to help inform the public about the project. The third video in the series is available now. Watch it here. The Capital Improvement Project looks to do a full renovation at either Van Buren Elementary or Elden Elementary. Why Elden OR Van Buren? Both schools are almost 70 years old and are in need of full renovation. Given that one of the project’s goals is to maximize state aid, and factoring in the length of time it takes to complete capital improvement projects, only one of the two schools will undergo full renovation as part of this proposed project. The second school will undergo renovations with this project, but the full renovations for the second school will be completed as part of a future proposed project. You're invited to take a building tour of the schools to take a look at their current conditions. The tour of Elden will take place on Thursday, November 14th at 5:30 p.m. The tour of Van Buren will take place on Tuesday, November 19th at 5:30 p.m. No registration required. Visit our capital project webpage to learn more about the project.

    • Tickets are available now for Baldwinsville Theater Arts Program's Junior Musical production of Dear Edwina Jr., which is running on Friday, November 22nd and Saturday, November 23rd. Tickets are no cost to the public. No online fees are assessed for free tickets.  A reservation is required for entry. Reserve tickets on the BTAP website. There are three showtimes:

      • 7 p.m. on Friday, November 22

      • 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 23

      • 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 23

    • Last month, SU students in the 2024 Alexia Fall Workshop spent time uncovering stories nestled in the daily life of Baldwinsville, from the bustle in the village to the entire day at C.W. Baker High School. The public is invited to attend the community showcase of the student's work on Thursday, November 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the C.W. Baker High School Auditorium.

    • Congratulations to senior Alex Jerrett who won the Bousquet Holstein Photo Contest Grand Prize this year with his "Eyes on the Milky Way" photo. The theme this year was "Humanity & the Natural World.” There were more than 200 photos submitted from high school students in Onondaga and Tompkins counties. Twenty-two photos were chosen as finalists. Alex Jerrett had three photos selected as finalists. Senior Alex Sherpa’s “Sky on Fire” photo was also honored as a finalist. • October 4, 2024

    Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,

As I reflect on the incident involving a trespasser inside C.W. Baker High School on Monday afternoon, I feel it is important to discuss what we learned with families and staff. This was an unprecedented incident for our district. We practice, plan and prepare for emergency situations, but until we are in them, it is nearly impossible to anticipate every decision that needs to be made.

We are all human. Making split-second decisions while under stress is a huge responsibility, but it is a responsibility that every staff member carries. This week I met with staff and sent out several communications regarding our safety protocols and reminders of our district’s policy and safety plan. No situation is ever perfect, but it is expected that we always look to improve -- we are doing this!

We are all in this together. Everyone needs to remain vigilant to ensure the safety and security of our district. Students, staff and community members play a role in keeping everyone safe. High school students were reminded on Tuesday morning about reporting suspicious activity on campus, alerting a staff member if someone enters the building without going through security, and to never open doors for anyone, including other students.

We also want to take this opportunity to remind families that the blue lights on our buildings flash during a lockdown. If you see the blue lights, please avoid the school and the area.

We learn from our mistakes. I’m extremely proud of the staff for the way they handled this incident, but that doesn’t mean we were flawless. There were missteps. I have reviewed the timeline and debriefed our response with law enforcement, our administrators and leadership team. We immediately put into action steps to improve our communication to families, including making sure every parent receives a phone call during a lockdown or lockout in the future. We will strive to have more communication during an incident to keep families updated as much as possible.

Changes were also made at Baker, including updating dismissal procedures. Students and staff are now restricted on where they can exit the building during dismissal. They are now permitted to use one of the four designated exits only. Baker is also changing its after school protocols. A bell will ring at about 2:30 p.m., at which time students are expected to be in study hall or with the teacher who they are meeting with until the late buses arrive.

Our athletic coaches and after school activity advisors have reviewed safety procedures with our athletes and club members.

All of our other schools have used this experience as a learning opportunity to make adjustments to entry/exit protocols and to review best practices for emergency and/or unexpected situations.

Our team continues to carefully analyze Monday's events and response, review all safety protocols, educate our staff and students, as well as make adjustments so that we learn, grow, and improve as an entire school community. We appreciate your continued support.

  • Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,

It’s hard to believe that the first month of the 2024-2025 school year is coming to an end. It’s been a busy first month and it’s been so great to see so many families at our curriculum nights, athletic events and at the Marching Band Home Show. Today is homecoming, which is such a great time to bring our community together and celebrate school spirit. C.W. Baker High School held a pep rally this afternoon to gear up for tonight’s varsity football game. Go Bees!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank members of our facilities crew who keep our schools and buildings safe and clean for our students, staff and community. Wednesday is School Custodian Appreciation Day. Thank you for your dedication and hard work every day!

I have a few announcements to share with you today:

    • Our District’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Community Committee collected Halloween costumes last fall to donate to elementary school students in our district. Now it is time to distribute them! Donated costumes will be available at no charge to elementary age (or younger) BCSD students. There are two days to pick up costumes - October 2nd and 8th. Families can browse for their costumes between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the rear-side of the Student Services Office located in the District Operations Building on main campus.

    • The district is pleased to announce that we will be conducting teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) training for all Durgee Junior High School and C.W. Baker High School students who are taking a health class this school year. The tMHFA training is an evidence-based training that teaches teens how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in their friends and peers. The training gives teens the skills they need to have supportive conversations with their friends and emphasizes the importance of getting help from a responsible and trusted adult. This is our second year offering this training and our first year expanding it to Durgee. Mental health is an important topic to our district and I’m proud of our educators for offering this important training to our teens. Learn more on our website.

    • Our Marching Bees have a busy weekend. In addition to performing at today’s pep rally and tonight’s homecoming football game, they will compete in a rare doubleheader on Saturday. The Bees will compete in an afternoon competition at Auburn High School and an evening competition at West Genesee High School. Go Bees!

    • Good luck to all of our student-athletes who are in action this weekend!

Have a great weekend! Go Bees!

  • Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,

The first week of school is a mix of emotions and adjustments for students, staff and families. I hope your family had an exciting first week and is settling back into your school routines. Thank you for your patience as we settled back into our routine with transportation routes and security protocols. In my opinion, it was a successful first week! Great job, everyone!

I have a few announcements to share with you today:

    • We hope you are finding what you need on our new website. A few users have reported difficulty locating the webpages for our schools. The link to access the individual school websites is located at the very top of any webpage on www.bville.org. You’ll see a link for the “District” and a link for “Schools.” Clicking the “Schools” link will give you options for each of the eight school buildings. Also, if you’re on a mobile device and having trouble finding information on any webpage, click on the “menu” button, which is a symbol with 3 horizontal lines. If you find a broken link or can’t find what you are looking for, please use the Contact Us form on the website or email support@bville.org for assistance. Thank you for your patience.

    • Our Bees are back in action. Good luck to all student-athletes with games this weekend. You can check out our athletic schedule on our website and follow our Athletics Department on X (Twitter). If you are attending an athletic event on our main campus, please note that we are under construction at Durgee Junior High School and the field and turf project. The construction will impact where spectators can park. Please obey all construction and parking signs. Spectators are encouraged to park in the south stadium lot near the District Operations Building, in the District Office’s lot near Albert Palmer Lane or in Baker High School’s main circle. See the map on our website for more details.

    • Good luck to our Marching Bees as they prepare for the first competition of the season, which will be held on Saturday, September 7th at the Jordan-Elbridge High School. The show starts at 6 p.m. Baldwinsville is scheduled to perform at 7:18 p.m.
